Thoughts by the editor this morning
Waking up with a bitter, 30mph cold wind blowing against the house, I am thankful for a roof over my family's head, food packed in the refrigerator and pantry, and a low monthly heating bill. We say a prayer for the homeless in Minnesota, who are being thrown to the wolves with the Republicans setting the agenda for our troubled state.

why is it that we expect that it is the job of the govt to provide for the homeless and the poor? how about we who have a roof over our heads and three square meals a day share some of our good fortune by donating to churches and other religious org that help the poor and the homeless? after all govt welfare programs are a fairly recent development for most of out country's history it was churches and neighbors that helped out the less fortunate. My grandfather died when my dad was 7 yrs old in 1915 yet my grandmother managed to keep the farm and raise three boys thanks to hard work and a lot of generous help from our church. with our state govt facing a multi billion $ deficit I feel that getting people off govt programs would be a step in right direction in balancing the budget and also save local county governments a lot of money too. I understand that it takes about 20 people to run all the various state and federal social service programs just in Stevens county. that is a lot of money in salary and benefits a county has to pay to say nothing of funding some of programs.
